In Memoriam Petrus Cornelius Mayer OSA

We received the news that in Germany on March 8 2021, fr. Petrus Cornelius Mayer passed away. One day short of his 92st birthday.

From the many run to the one, collect what has been scattered together into one, flow together, secure yourself, stay with the one; don’t go after the many. That’s where true happiness lies. (S. 96,6)

Born March 9, 1929 in Budapest, Hungary, he fled his country in 1946 with his family and they settled in Germany where he entered the augustinian order as a novice in 1949. In Würzburg he studies Theology, and received his doctorate in 1963. He became a Professor at the Justus Liebig University of Giessen. His immense work in the field of research on Augustine earned him an Honorary Doctorate at the University of Villanova in 1988.

His first big feat in the field of Augustine Research was the Corpus Augustinianum Gissense (CAG)which consists of the body of works of Augustine in Latin. First on CD-Rom, then as an online resource. In 1979 he started another ‘life’s work’ : the Augustinus-Lexikon. He bundled keywords from the works and doctrine and life of Augustine and assembled experts in the field to write articles about these lemmata. Once retired from the univirsity in 1995, he took this project to the Zentrum für Augustinus-Forschung, where he tirelessly worked to complete the job untill his health prohibited it in 2017.

Unfortunately, p. Petrus Mayer will not see his Augustinus-Lexikon complete – the plan is for that to happen in the summer of 2021.
